How to preview iPhone/iPod apps in browser?

Posted by The Patri0t 5 February, 2010 (0) Comment

Apple has recently allowed users to preview iPhone/iPod Touch apps in browser without starting iTunes. It was a hassle before, iTunes was the requirement to preview but not anymore.

It gives a detailed view of the apps, their requirements and ratings etc. It’s very nice. Here’s how you can preview all the apps in AppStore without the use of iTunes.

1. Go to AppStore page on Apple’s website.
2. Click on an App of your liking, once the page loads just click on the App/iPhone screenshot and it will take you to the App preview page with complete details.

Here’s an example of how the AppStore preview looks like on a browser: Zipcar

How to disable “open new tab next to current active tab” in Firefox 3.6

Posted by The Patri0t 3 February, 2010 (2) Comment

A reader, Mukesh sent an email saying that he just upgraded to Firefox 3.6 and now the tabs are opening next to each other instead of old Firefox behaviour i.e. tabs opening from links via middle click etc. at very end of the tab bar/at right in Firefox. This can be a bit confusing for old Firefox users, although it’s a good change since one will know which group of tabs is it, i.e. of a particular website.

Anyhow, the reader wants to know if there is any way of changing this behavior, there sure is when you mention Firefox. Given below is the method to change the new behavior of Firefox so it opens new tab at far end/right side of tab bar instead of opening it next to current active tab.

1. Open Firefox, type about:config in address bar.
2. Don’t worry, that’s a standard warning, just click I’ll be careful, I promise! button.
3. Paste browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent in Filter area, so its filtered out for you. The default value for this will be true. You just have to change the value to false, simply by right clicking browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent and selecting Toggle, so the value is changed to false.
4. Close the tab and restart Firefox, you are done!

Hope this helps you Mukesh (and of course other readers too).

How to install an IP.Board 3.x skin

Posted by The Patri0t 12 August, 2009 (4) Comment

This is a tutorial about installing an Invision Power Board 3.0 skin. It covers how to install Invision Power Board or IPB 3.0 skin.

Step-1
Download the skin you want to use, unzip if necessary, then login to your Board’s Admin Control Panel and click “Look & Feel” tab.

Step-1

Step-2
Click Import/Export under “Look & Feel”

Step-2

Step-3
Browse for Skin set file with ‘.xml’ or ‘.xml.gz’ extension and click Import Skin Set to upload it. You can also upload the said file to root folder of your forum and name the file instead. Repeat the same process for Skin Image set & Import Replacements. Import Replacements will not come with all skins, so if the skin you chose does not have it then don’t worry.

Step-3

Step-4
Go back to “Look & Feel” tab again, Edit Settings of the skin you just uploaded, make sure you select the correct Image set of your skin.

Step-5

That’s it. The skin is installed now. If you have any questions concerning the process then feel free to leave a comment and ask.

How to Add External IR Keyboard to iPhone Without Jailbreaking

Posted by The Patri0t 24 March, 2009 (0) Comment

Yes, this has been done by the hackers! iPhone lacks an actual keyboard since its all touch screen and unlike Smart phones from Nokia, it cannot support a Bluetooth keyboard either. This may change with the upcoming OS 3.0 of iPhone since apparently Apple is opening access to iPhone’s Bluetooth.

Anyway, returning to the original topic now. See below:

iPhone with a keyboard

Zack created a modified version of the microcontroller firmware used for the audio port modem, expanded to detect an infrared signal or read from a USB host controller, then read the data transmitted by an attached keyboard and convert it to an FSK signal for transmission to an iPhone.

George then modified the iPhone application to interpret the keyboard data and display the appropriate characters on-screen.

5. Repeat step 3 to delete NoFolderOptions entry.

Solution 2: Change setting in Group Policy
