I knew right away it was modem, I removed it, start the system and shut down, it happened! The problem was gone then I inserted Modem again, the problem was no longer there. Weird problem.</color=red>

I had contacted Asus too, I got reply after a day telling me I should back up the data and format/install Windows XP again. LoL. It’s solved anyways.

OK…As if I did not have enough problems already. So last night, after modding the case and setting the CPU with Thermal Take Big Typhoon on it, I turn on, everything runs fine but when I shut down, I hear the hard disk cutting off but everything else is running. The Motherboard, all fans and the UV lights on the casing too. Weird…

I tried to search Google, till now I have found out only that in such cases replacing the PSU helped or replacing the Mobo helped but I don’t get it…Why did it happen? I will change PSU soon anyways, not able to find the one I want here so…

Let me know please if any one of you has a solution to this.

I have received e-mail from Asus, officially and not through usual Support method. Thanks to Gary [from Anandtech] for that! and ofcourse Thanks to Asus… It seems to have solved the problem with performance lag when copying files from or to the devices connected with JMicron, even when you use default driver of Windows XP, the usual “Standard Dual Channel IDE Controller” but I am not satisfied about the BOOT time . . .

It seems as though the when installing the Jmicron controller the default could be DMA/PIO which it must be detected as Ultra DMA 5 in order for these controllers to speed up (with the device/drives attached).

The BIOS for the Jmicron must be set to RAID.

The problem probably is when installing both the Jmicron controller along with the sound drivers, both are using a lot of CPU resources at the same time.
Dear Jimmy and Gary,

Thanks for the opportunity. Wish you good \nluck for solving the problem. It is "WIDE SPREAD", I have been getting hundreds \nof hits a day from Google for the said problem to my site and a lot of users are \nvery frustrated. Fix it as soon as possible or you will lose a lot of loyal \nfans.

I will appreciate if you can write an official response about the \nproblems related to Asus P5B Deluxe and any other Asus board with Soundmax Audio \nand JMicron controller having similar issues. I would appreciate if I can get an \nofficial statement about it so I can put it up on my website so the users are \nassured.

Thanks!

I have been told by Asus to send the board in question back to the Distributor, have them checked and then sent to Asus RMA but I am not going to do that. It’s Pakistan not USA. It will take months before I get a new board and besides I don’t think it’s a hardware problem, it’s the stupid drivers released by Asus.

The proof is simple, install Windows Vista and it loads up all drivers, you will not feel any performance lags or any thing like what you face in Windows XP after installing drivers provided by Asus. Windows Vista Ultimate’s installation time with me is 15-20 minutes only, the boot time with default drivers and installation is just 20 seconds with 1 GB of RAM and double of that with 512 MB of RAM.

I then downloaded version 6.10.01.5110 of Audio driver present on Asus P5B Deluxe drivers page, which were the latest at that time and still. New version has appeared on Asus FTP, I have yet to try that. After installing the Audio drivers provided by Asus and Soundmax, guess what… The boot time which was 20 seconds with default drivers reached 40 seconds!!!

I am not able to figure out the problem with Frontpanel Audio though, it does not work under Windows Vista’s default drivers. I have not tested if it works or not with drivers provided by Asus and Soundmax but I really don’t care about the front panel if there is no change in performance.

Yeah, if you don’t want to curse Asus or yourself later for buying an expensive Board giving you problems which you won’t be able to resolve then DON’T buy Asus P5B Deluxe. Yeah I know, the Hardware Review sites might be calling it a good performer, surely it is, surely it can over clock well too. People reaching a 100% over clock but if you will be using integrated audio on this board then you are out of your luck.

Audio drivers provided by Asus for the said board, for Windows XP and most probably Windows Vista too are known to cause problems. I wonder why on earth no Hardware Review site found out about this. Perhaps they did but “Did not want a bad name for Asus” or perhaps if they published it publicly, they would not get free lunch from Asus anymore? Yeah this can be a reason…

There is more to it. JMicron SATA/PATA controller provided in this board DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY with the drivers they are providing either. One does not actually need to install drivers for the said controller unless used for RAID functions since Windows XP loads up default IDE/SATA drivers which work without any problem. But what can you say. When people buy a new Motherboard they install drivers from the CD. There will be an Autorun and it will install “All drivers” including “JMicron” and that believe me is pain in the posterior.

Windows will literally freeze because of the Audio drivers provided by Asus. It will freeze when you are trying to navigate in and out of folders. Want proof? OK, I will try to get it tomorrow. The boot time is already messed up because of the Audio drivers, as you install the JMicron things will go more slow. Installing a few softwares like ZoneAlarm Pro and the media software bundle CD which comes with the said motherboard, installing those side by side with JMicron’s drivers will cause your top of the line Core 2 DUO computer to act like a turtle.

Oh and their support is amazingly super duper STUPID too! Just give them a try. First you will get a late reply and when you get it will be some guy who does not know proper English. Am I sounding pissed off? You will too believe me, after trying this stupid board. I feel sorry for the name P5B Deluxe and the poor hardware. It’s not fault of this thing but the guys who make Drivers. I wish someone takes up this matter up Asus’s through a law suit. Perhaps then they roll out a driver. Is there any authority where you can report such a thing of Computer Companies? I am going to search for such one now and report to them.

Going to Asus’s downloads website and then finding the appropriate download is a slow and somewhat painful process so I have setup direct download links to all BIOS versions of Asus P5B Deluxe. The list is now arranged as the latest BIOS version on top and so on; you don’t have to scroll down anymore to get the latest BIOS version.

I am just linking to the BIOS versions available on Asus’s servers. I will not be responsible for any damage or loss that might be caused due to the BIOS upgrade procedure. If you have not done BIOS upgrade before then I suggest you consult someone who can do it properly & here’s a warning from Asus; consider it from my side too.

Please leave a comment if you like the effort =)
