Video capture your desktop for free

There are a number of softwares for the said job, video capturing the desktop, not most or all of them are free. I’d like to mention a desktop video capture software here that’s OpenSource and totally free and it does the job better than the paid ones.

It is CamStudio;

CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs)

Here are just a few ways you can use this software:

  • You can use it to create demonstration videos for any software program
  • Or how about creating a set of videos answering your most frequently asked questions?
  • You can create video tutorials for school or college class
  • You can use it to record a recurring problem with your computer so you can show technical support people
  • You can use it to create video-based information products you can sell
  • You can even use it to record new tricks and techniques you discover on your favourite software program, before you forget them

You can download it from CamStudio’s Official Website. Post your comments about the said software if you have used it.

I have that software. i will give it a 9.6 out of 10 rating because of its small size and good speed and it is very easy to use.

I’ve tried cam studio but for reasons that I guess are related to the codec pack on my computer the performance was HORRIBLE. I tried a number of options, recording and encoding simultaneosly, recording uncompressed than compressing, the above at various levels of quality and couldn’t get anything decent. I’ve heard other people have had success, so I blame it one my codecs (the computer is pretty good, I run Maya all the time) but just couldn’t figure out how to get CamStudio to perform.

camuser: You need to visit their official website and download Lossless Codec from them. Use that, turns out perfectly for me. No lags or anything.
