A bit late to this party, but have you heard of Qumana ? It's free, runs on both PC and Mac, and it looks (at least to me) as if MS spent some time studying it whilst developing Livewriter. It's been around for quite a while (beta released in February '06), almost all of the known bugs have been fixed, and it has a pretty decent following or satisfied users.

What's most pertinent here is that it (Qumana) is cross-platyform, and operates just as well on a Mac as on a PC.
